Do I need a blog on my business website?

1- As a micro or small business owner, my schedule is really tight and I really have to optimize my time. So I wonder if having a blog is necessary on my website?

Yes. If your blog is part of your website, it becomes a content generator for your site. Adding regularly targeted content will help you to get a better organic ranking on search engines.

2- I know that having a blog on my website will help my ranking on search engines but I am not sure to really understand why?

To put it in a very simple way search engines don’t really rank websites but pages and their content. It means that they look specifically at each page (i.e. individual URL) on your site. They evaluate each URL’s content on its own relevance for your site. So the real impact of blogging is actually the potential for ranking of each of your post. This is why you have to focus on each post having its own set of keyword phrases.

3- But what if I do not have ideas or time to update my blog? Does it really matter how often i add content?

Blogging can increase the frequency at which search engines crawl your site. Many small business sites are relatively static. The owner had paid someone to create a site, and the site remains relatively unchanged for years. Such sites might be scheduled to be indexed by Google only once per month since whenever they crawl it, they find nothing new. Adding a blog to such a site and posting to it frequently can change that.

If each time that the crawler returns to your site, it finds new content, then the crawler is going to come more and more often. The search engine tries to find the right balance between your site’s content generation rate and its crawl frequency. Crawling and indexing pages on sites that rarely change is a waste of their resources (remember the billions of websites out there, they have to find a way to prioritize).

So yes, it does matter to regularly publish blog posts as they are a convenient way to add content. And remember to set up your blog to “PING” the search engines (notify them there is new content) each time you publish a new post. So your site will be crawled quickly after posting new content.

4- Should all my blog posts be focused on my business?

It is very important to write about your line of business in order to get relevant content that search engine will crawl. But you must never forget that the main point of your posts is to be interesting for your target audience. Just bundling together keywords phrases is not producing value. If you are not sure what to write about, try to get inspiration around you. And yes sometimes it is also ok, to leave your pure business line, as long as the topic is not completely off your website.

Giving people more topics and opportunities to link back to your blog/website by widening your range of content is also an interesting strategy. Links will help your site rank. Do not hesitate also to direct people and search engines to important pages on your main site by inserting links in the content you write.

If you are lacking inspiration, you can also get back to one of your former  posts and update it with new information. Adding relevant links to get complementary information from other sites is also a good way to update a post.
